The Gold Series Advantage is the balance achieved between comfort, noise
attenuation and purity of sound. No compromises. No excuses.
Natural replication of amplified sound.
Real audiophiles understand that for purity of sound an analog
sound system is superior to a digital sound system, however, digital
systems can correct imperfections or enhance and modify sound better
than analog systems. Most active hearing protectors or stereo
headphones employ one technology or the other. Our engineers at
Pro-Ears were not willing to compromise for the sake of simplicity or
cost. The result is the hybrid digital/analog system found exclusively
in the Gold Series active hearing protectors. Clear sound, clear
commands, real advantage.
To further enhance the natural sound
quality we use gold connectors and high quality amplifiers and
microphones to reduce impedance. Our proprietary software reduces
interference caused by wind while enhancing the sounds you want to
hear. Advancements to our exclusive DLSC™ technology for
compression turn an impulse sound wave from a gunshot into a soft,
audible pop. Finely engineered circuitry with proprietary programming
has reduced attack time to
1.5 milliseconds. We provide adjustable gain control so you can adjust
the industry leading sound
amplification to match your situational needs.
What is the difference between Pro Tac and the regular Gold models?
The Pro Tac models are essentially the same as the traditional gold models and have the same electronic technology. However, the differences are the Pro Tac models:
- Include an option of “N” size Battery or Lithium 123a batteries –which are more commonly found in law enforcement and military service equipment
- The cup emblem is grey and more subdued
- Cup is slightly narrower at the bottom for the slim and mag models

Warning: Do not buy these.
I own the Pro Mags and Pro Tac muffs. Like other customers who bought the Pro Mag muffs, after a period of time they start making static noise, etc. Clearly a problem with the electronics. Of course it is not covered under warranty and they want a diagnostic fee just to look at them. Then an additional amount after the fact to fix/replace them. It's not worth it folks. Muffs this expensive should last 10+ years. Expect to replace your pro ears every few years if you stick with this brand.
My Pro Tacs are just starting to fail now and I have had them for less time than the Pro Mags.
Unfortunately, it makes no sense to pay more money to have them looked at. I am pretty much out $600 on two head sets. I will have to work on a youtube review for these products.
I have been getting a buzzing in the ear cups that started about 6 months after I purchased them. I put up with it because a quick turn off and on and the problem went away. After I had them for over a year the problem got worse so I called about it. I was told they were out of warrantee and I would have to pay to have them looked at. I wonder what happened to the five year warrantee? It did not matter what I said the answer was to include a check for $29.95 just to have them looked at. After their 'diagnostic check' I would be contacted with the how much more it would cost me to have them fixed. I was also told it would take about a month for me to get them back after I authorized the repair. No thanks. I will buy another brand.
If you don't mind the size and price, this is excellent hearing protection without losing situational awareness irrespective of where you shoot. This is a large, full-sized, bulky, solidly built, made-in-the-USA hearing protection with a 5-year warranty that works very well and is comfortable. It provides the maximum attenuation (33 dB NRR) for muffs of this type.
Pros:
1. Very quick response (fast "attack time") to high-pressure (>80 dB) sounds so you can still hear what's occurring around you (from yahoos at the range making "unsafe comments" to range commands from Range Safety Officers) between gun fire sounds.
2. Takes CR123 batteries instead of obscure "medical" batteries. Their earlier models required odd medical batteries. The ones I got use commonly available CR123 batteries. YOU MAY NEED TO SPECIFY AND ASK FOR THE MODEL THAT USES THE CR123 BATTERIES when ordering.
3. Very comfortable to wear for many hours.
Cons:
1. Lack of detail to construction. I see slight glue over-run at the junction between the leather and the muff.
2. Size is too large if you want to properly mount a rifle. You may consider the smaller version, but you would sacrifice a bit on hearing protection.
3. No detailed instructions that show the locations of the jumpers for the model I own. I may have the latest (4th generation) muffs, and I could not find detailed depiction of jumpers for my muffs. It really does not matter as the jumpers are very well labeled on the muffs, but when you pay so much money for hearing protection, I would expect attention to all details.
My hearing means the world to me and I also enjoy shooting my pistols a lot, so I sprung for the best. My frequent visits to an indoor 10-lane range allowed me to thoroughly test this electronic muff. Irrespective of caliber (.223 rifle, .22 cal, 9mm, .40 cal, 357 Magnum, .45 cal, etc.) the active sound attenuation works very well. I am also able to hear my surroundings, including the whirling of the air conditioning fan, someone dropping a bullet, or a spent casing landing on the ground. I have not tried plugging anything into the input plugs (such as to listen to scanner, music, etc.), but such feature may be helpful to someone who needs to hear his communications radio's audio discreetly at the range.
Operational hints:
I set the muff's gain to "high", but I did NOT turn up the ear muff's volume control because it hears TOO well! High gain setting simply meant that the microphones are twice as sensitive as the "low" setting (as per the manual for 3rd generation Pro Tac muffs). I also found that I received the maximum protection and benefit by making sure the ear muffs straps and cups are properly fitted onto my head and ears.
Would I purchase these ear muffs again? Yes. Would I recommend these to friends? Yes. What would I purchase next? Probably the Pro Ears Tac Slim Gold NRR 28 Ear Muffs with 2 Lithium 123a Batteries, solely for the ability to easily mount a rifle while wearing electronic ear protection.

Thank you for the opportunity to test and evaluate your Pro Ears during a recent firing range course where I put your Pro Ears to the test. I must say without a doubt that Pro Ears is the BEST product for hearing protection on the range that I have ever experienced. As a former U.S. Army Combat veteran, active executive protection agent, current NRA Firearms Instructor and Range Safety Officer, I can tell you that I have been on many ranges and have tried many different types of hearing protection. Pro Ears is simply in a class by itself! It offers unequalled performance and comfort at all levels. The built-in integrated electronics offer exceptional performance in filtering out unwanted noises, to include gun fire, while at the same time providing crystal clear voice communications; this feature alone is priceless on the range when it comes to safety. I highly recommend Pro Ears to any serious gun owner, law enforcement officer, military personnel or civilian looking for exceptional hearing protection.
